Political Reportage: Basford Action Week

Basford Cleans up: Week of Action Success

28 arrests, 8 vehicle seizures and 15 fixed penalty notices were served during Basford’s week-long crack down on crime.
The week of action in November proved a huge success in cleaning up the streets of Basford Ward. The aim was to reduce antisocial behaviour and organized crime in the area as well as promote local community confidence in the constabulary.

Clean sweep operations in the Vernon Road area carried out by Notts Police using automatic number plate recognition cameras, resulted in 40 vehicles being stopped, with fixed penalties being issued to twenty-six vehicles. Eight vehicles were seized for offences ranging from driving without insurance to possession of drugs.

Action taken by the Nottingham Crime and Drugs partnership included three search warrants being executed, resulting in two arrests and the recovery of class A drugs. Additional patrols resulted in further arrests and reduced levels of anti-social behaviour in hotspot areas.
The action week also put a large focus on the problem of dog fouling in public spaces, which has been identified by local councillors and residents as a key issue in the area. A mobile CCTV unit was used to monitor the worst affected areas resulting in a total of six penalties being issued.

Mobile dog fouling clean-up units Poover and Fido were in operation throughout the week to keep Basford clean. Further work into cleaning up the public areas of Basford Ward has resulted in the removal of 82 square feet of graffiti and 18 tonnes of waste.

Over 200 citizens have signed up to the neighbourhood alert programme and future leaflet drops hope to encourage many more to take a more hands-on approach to maintaining the community.
